Energy saving tips for renters

While a landlord is likely to take energy-saving initiatives seriously, it's in your best interest, as well. Knowing how electricity, water usage and gas impact your pocketbook can make a significant difference in your monthly bottom line.

10 tips to turn down your energy use

You don't have to own a home to tackle energy-saving initiatives. Here are some easy ways to keep your energy costs at a minimum, while also helping the environment.

  1. Reduce your hot water usage by washing your laundry in cold water and scrape dishes instead of rinsing them.
  2. Add window coverings and treatments to minimize the loss of warm air in winter and cool air in summer.
  3. Install a programmable thermostat that adjusts while you are gone or sleeping. (Can't do this on your own? Ask your landlord for help. This benefits him/her, too.)
  4. Unplug any battery chargers or power adapters when not in use and turn off power strips when you are done using equipment. Even though your electronics may be powered off, they still consume electricity.
  5. Keep air registers clear of debris, furniture or coverings to maximize air flow. It's amazing how free space around vents can make a room feel so much warmer or cooler, depending on the season.
  6. Use energy-efficient light bulbs. While they cost more at the onset, they last 6-10 times longer, ultimately saving you money.
  7. Open windows and use a fan for air circulation instead of air conditioning in the summer.
  8. Turn off water while shaving and brushing teeth.
  9. Do not preheat your oven except for baking. (Baked items are more sensitive to heat changes than other cooked foods.)
  10. Clean your dryer lint trap after every load.

When you put these ideas to work for you, you do something good for yourself and the earth.
