What to do in an earthquake

Earthquakes strike without warning. If you feel the earth begin to move, you'll want to protect yourself and your family.

Here’s how to stay safe when the ground begins to shake.

Inside:

  • Stay where you are. Injuries are most likely to happen moving from one place to another within a building or trying to leave the building.
  • If you are in bed during an earthquake, stay there and cover your head with a pillow.
  • Drop to the ground, take cover underneath a strong piece of furniture, and hold on until the shaking subsides. Avoid windows, outside-facing doors and walls and anything that could fall on you.

Outside:

  • Wherever you are, stay there until the shaking stops – unless you are directly outside a building – that’s the most dangerous place to be. In that case, move out of the way of exterior walls that could collapse and cause debris to fall.
  • Cover your head to protect it from falling debris.
  • Avoid streetlights and electrical wires.

In your vehicle:

  • Stop as quickly and as safely as you can but avoid parking near a building or on an overpass, and beneath anything threatening like big trees or electrical lines.
  • Once the shaking has subsided, drive with extreme caution. Avoid roads, ramps and bridges that may have been damaged by the quake.
