What is comprehensive coverage for a vehicle?

Comprehensive coverage protects you if your vehicle is damaged due to something other than a collision. These losses could happen even when you aren't using your car, such as damage from theft, vandalism, and natural disasters. Some comprehensive losses may be referred to as "acts of nature" because they're caused by natural occurrences that you have little control over, like hailstorms, flooding or falling trees.

What does comprehensive insurance cover?

Comprehensive coverage could protect you from out-of-pocket costs beyond your selected deductible if your car is damaged by any of the following:

  • A break-in or vandalism
  • A shattered or cracked window or windshield not caused by an accident
  • A bird, deer or other animal that strikes your car
  • Fire or an explosion
  • An earthquake, tornado, hail, windstorm or other natural disaster
  • Something falling onto your car

Coverage for stored vehicles

You might think that your home insurance would cover damage to a car you've stored in your garage. However, home policies do not cover damage to vehicles, whether they're parked in a garage overnight or stored long-term on your property or at another location. Instead, a covered loss to a stored vehicle would fall under your car policy if you have added comprehensive coverage for the stored vehicle.

Do I need comprehensive coverage?

That's an important question. Repairs can be expensive if your vehicle is damaged from hail or another unexpected calamity. In some cases, like in a fire, your vehicle may not be salvageable. You'll want to consider the age of your car — the cost to repair or replace an older vehicle may be less than the cost of coverage. Can you cover the cost to repair or replace your vehicle out of your own pocket?

Comprehensive coverage can help provide peace of mind that you'll be protected from unexpected costs should such a situation arise, especially if you own a newer vehicle that would cost more to replace. Also keep in mind that if you have a loan on your car, your financial institution may require you to carry comprehensive coverage on your car policy.
