If you are injured in an accident, medical costs can quickly add up. You may find yourself asking, "Does car insurance cover medical bills?"

Whether your injuries require just one doctor visit or weekly appointments for a year, medical expense insurance will cover the cost of all necessary medical expenses you incur after an automobile accident, regardless of who is at fault.

What does medical expense insurance cover?

Specifically, medical expense insurance (also known as automobile medical payments coverage or just medical payments coverage) may cover things such as:

  • EMT and ambulance fees
  • Doctor visits
  • Hospital stays
  • Surgeries
  • X-rays
  • Funeral costs

Medical payments insurance covers anyone who is named on the policy as well as, your spouse, relatives living in your household and anyone occupying a vehicle on your policy.

How much medical payments coverage do I need?

Medical payments coverage is optional depending on where you live. But it's good to take a thorough look at your health insurance plan when deciding if you need this coverage. Would you be able to afford all of the out- of- pocket expenses, co-pays, co-insurance, etc., if you got into an accident and incurred severe injuries? Also, do you often drive other people around in your car? Maybe you take an elderly relative on weekly errands or you carpool to work with co-workers. Medical payments coverage would help cover them too, in case you ever got in an accident when they were occupying your car.

However, there may be different limits associated with this coverage. Review your car insurance policy for details.
